Profile

As a ceramicist, my goal is to produce a new style of modern Kutani ceramics decoration, utilizing a specific style of Kutani ceramics' traditional design (that is to say, a highly intricate multicolored and/or red overglaze painting). In particular, I always focus on producing pieces of elegance and delicacy, using the five traditional colors of Kutani ware (red, yellow, green, blue, and purple). As regards overglaze painting, even though this style of using distinct, fine brushstrokes is quite labor intensive, I take the master works of my predecessors as my models: it is with sincere appreciation that I inherit these traditional techniques, while at the same time striking out on my own path.
My overglaze motif is typically floral, as well as geometrical motifs of stars and sunlight. With both these motifs, the underlying theme is light; I have a strong desire that my works, in their essence, catch light and coruscate with the intensity of the brilliant moments that illuminate our lives, that my suns and stars sparkle like chandeliers. We tend to get swept up in the flow of busy modern life - but I want my objects to be something that, when held in the hand, arrest that flow for a moment and allow one to focus and reflect on the present moment. That present moment, that "ray of hope", is what I aim to express in my dishes and objects; something that is at once both bold, and yet delicate.
